tl:dr; EEG Dev Kit production completed. Electrodes almost finished. Orders shipping soon.
First the good news - tDCS functionality is now available in foc.us/me and the 2nd production run of foc.us EEG Dev Kit resumes next week including a new EEG electrode design.
The bad news (for us) is that our original EEG electrode design had a small design fault.
Firmware version 0.7.4 is available and includes a bunch of goodies. Click to read more and see a cool animated gif.
Based on the first week of EEG Dev Kit setup calls the following are the top three prioritized requests:
- Additional non-Facebook login option for foc.us/me
- WiFi provisioning video guide
- tDCS stimulation functionality
If you need help setting up your EEG Dev Kit please schedule a call here.
First batch EEG have been shipped!
For tutorials and control use foc.us/me
If you need help with initial setup please schedule a call here
Don't miss the chance to be part of 2nd batch family here.
tldr; EEG Dev Kit orders will ship this week.
People say "hardware is hard" and they are right. But software is much, much harder.
When we made our March estimate for EEG Dev Kit shipments, we were confident we would hit it or not slip by much. We had completed design for manufacturing (DfM) and t1 parts off moulded tools. We had schematics and PCBs. We had a working prototype that did the basics. It was our fourth product and the team had the scars from the first three.
But we didn't have the software finished. And we understimated how hard completing that task would be.
Probably we added too many features.
Did we really need WiFi AND bluetooth 5? Could we have lived without fNIRS? Will anyone really combine 5 devices to use 40 channels?
Maybe, but then it wouldn't be as good a device. And at foc.us we try to make the best possible devices.
So I'm sorry for the delay but I'm pleased to say that it is ready and will ship in the next few days.
As previously posted we have cut some functionality to get the product shipped. Your device will automatically update about once a fortnight as we release the missing features.
EXG, tES, Mic, IPU, 16k, fNIRS, 40x,- not ready.
Firmware 0.5.0 ready. Bootloader 1.0.0 ready. BLE 0.1.0 ready.Fuel Guage 0.1.0 ready. WiFi 1.0.0 ready. qFlash 1.0.0 ready. FFT 1.0.0 ready. eeg-ai 0.1.0 ready.
This update is over-due but we've been making some hard decisions which has delayed us.
We are way too late in shipping these out to you. We have not finished the firmware. The delay is caused by finishing the firmware. The firmware has been nearly there but not, for months.
So we have made the decision to cut functionality to the bones and ship it. This will get the hardware in your hands and it will be usable. But it will have lots of missing functionality. We will add this missing functionality as quickly as we can.
For example, for over a week we have been trying to get the web app to control the EEG parameter settings via aws iot. We wanted a nice UI were you could set the sample rate, change the channel mask and so forth. We estimated it would take a day. A week later it is still not ready. So we are cutting it. This means you won't be able to change the sample rate. But at this stage we think that a fixed sample rate is better than no device.
So over the next two days we are either setting or cutting functionality so that we can ship all orders this weekend. We will compile a full list of what we have cut and you hopefully you can help us prioritise it.
We should have done this two months ago but there is a saying I like. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now. So we are cutting and shipping.
Headline: EEG Dev Kit Nearly Ready
Sub-headline: EEG D.K. Will ship in July
Boot-loader issues are finally behind us. Firmware is being finished now. Some small cuts to get this out the door are likely. Update process is working smoothly so cut functionality will be rolled out remotely in due course. Its a monster of a device with so many sensors, settings and features.
Next, we are thrilled to tell you about a new suite of EEG software to help you get the most from your EEG hardware.
Focus have created a data processing platform that lets you manipulate the raw brain data into something more meaningful. You can apply filters, Fast-Fourier Transforms (FFT's) and visualize alpha, beta and delta bands. We call it focus EEG.ai
The name is a little previous, but the techniques we are developing to determine sleep stages, emotional response and focus use machine learning. So it's not ai yet, but it will be soon.
As a token of apology, all Early Bird 1st Batch customers will receive 6 months free access to foc.us EEG.ai.
The second batch of Dev Kits are selling fast at only
$999 $899 so don't miss out if you're on the fence.
Hardware < Firmware < Software
Anyone who has updated the firmware on their v2 will probably agree that it was not a fun process. Part of the problem is that bluetooth low energy has very small data transfer rates and a 300k firmware means a lot of 251byte packets. Drop any one and the process is dead.
So we wanted to make sure firmware updating for EEG DK was butter smooth and simple. It should be over-the-air and pain-free.
Frustratingly it is not yet and that is the cause of the delay. The devices are all sat here waiting to ship, but we don't want to give you something that is hard to update.
I am very sorry for the continued delay but it won't be much longer now. As soon as they can update themselves they will be shipped. We will also share some good news about some free stuff we will offer.
